Brian Laver Arrest 1966


Brian Laver being arrested at a protest against the Vietnam war held outside the United States Consulate in Queen Street, Brisbane, on Friday 1st July 1966.

Accompanying him are his wife, Janita, and two-year old daughter, Sidonie. They were not arrested. Their second daughter, Tempe, was born on 15th July 1966 just two weeks after this photo was taken.

There was a total of seven arrests at this protest - 6 men and one woman (namely, Jane Gaines).

Despite an extesive search, the source of this image is unknown. It is possible it was never formally published anywhere. A search reveals it was not published in the main-stream newspapers of the day, namely Courier Mail, Sunday Mail, Brisbane Telegraph, Sunday Truth, or the Tribune (CPA weekly). The Fryer Library and the Queensland State Archives (QSA) do not hold a copy of this image.
