Kup Murri

Kup Murri held at the University of Queensland on 7 August 1971 after the ending of the strike.

Kup Murri is an ancient Indigenous cooking technique where hot rocks are used to slow cook meats and vegetables buried in the ground. This cooking method is practiced by Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The strike at the University of Queensland formally ended on Friday, 6th August 1971, at a 'High Tea' ceremony in the J.D. Story Room.

The next day, Saturday 7th August, a ceremonial Kup Murri was held on campus to strengthen the relationship between Aboriginal communities and students. The preparations for this special social event is seen in this footage.

Note: Comalco was founded in 1956 as Commonwealth Aluminium Corporation Pty. Ltd. Comalco owns the Weipa bauxite mine on the western Cape York Peninsula in far-north Queensland. Comalco began mining bauxite at Weipa in 1961. In 1975, the Queensland Government also granted Comalco a lease to mine the bauxite deposit at Aurukun, Queensland. Comalco's lease at Aurukun was part of a series of actions that led to Aboriginal dispossession on Cape York.
